This book is a voyage of discovery to an unknown place, to the people who live here: Brigittenau. Somewhat off the beaten track, the 20th district itself is hardly familiar to many Viennese - perhaps because at first glance it has nothing spectacular, nothing extraordinary to offer. Founded 120 years ago on an area wrested from the Danube marshes, the former workers' and now immigrant district never quite got beyond its image as a casual "Viennese suburb". At second glance, however, a surprising diversity of characters reveals itself between wide magistrals, sprawling tenement blocks, abandoned industrial sites and secluded riverside paths. Over a period of five years, Christopher Mavrič used his analogue medium-format camera to document spontaneous encounters with residents of Twentieth and their living environment. All of them short stories captured in a single image, in which those portrayed, sometimes louder, sometimes quieter, provide information about themselves.
