Sabine Jaehnke discovered photography as a means of personal expression through workshops and attending the one-year specialist class at the Fotohof in 2016/2017, producing her first photographic works and photo books. Photography gave her the strength to continue her education despite a serious illness: in 2020 she attended the master class of the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie in Berlin with Ute Mahler and Ingo Taubhorn. Shortly before completing her final project, Sabine Jaehnke passed away in February 2021. Funafuti, her final project, is now being published posthumously.
Where can wanderlust be located? Is there even a place for longing, as the title Funafuti suggests? Isn't youth also such a place from the perspective of the elderly? Perhaps wanderlust and homesickness are also directly connected. Homesickness for home. And home is where childhood was. Just as unattainable. Only within ourselves. Both are interwoven in Funafuti. As homesickness for wanderlust. The dreams of the girl and the memory of these dreams at the end of life. (Göran Gnaudschun)
